Mortgage Fraud Investigation: Why Who You Trust With Your Loan Matters

You may have seen the recent ABC News headline around so-called “liar loans” and mortgage fraud across Australia’s banking sector.

The investigation, known as Operation Claw, was led by AUSTRAC’s Fintel Alliance and involved ASIC, APRA, the ATO, law enforcement agencies and 10 major Australian banks.

The findings were significant: potentially hundreds of millions of dollars in suspected fraudulent home loans were identified, with much of the activity linked to properties in Sydney. Investigators found cases involving inflated incomes, misrepresented employment, fabricated business activity and false or misleading documents.

The investigation also identified repeated use of some mortgage brokers, accountants and law firms across suspicious applications.

But this shouldn’t be taken as a reason to avoid brokers.

If anything, it highlights the importance of choosing the right broker.
