August Update: The Data’s In , Are Rate Cuts Just Around the Corner?

There’s growing optimism in the air — and for good reason.
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) is now firmly in the spotlight as mortgage brokers, economists, and financial markets anticipate a potential interest rate cut at the upcoming August meeting.
And for Aussie borrowers, the implications could be significant.
Inflation Falls Further, Opening the Door to Easing
New data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows inflation is cooling faster than expected. Headline CPI dropped to 2.1% in the June quarter — the lowest since 2021 and right at the bottom of the RBA’s target range of 2% to 3%. Meanwhile, trimmed mean inflation fell to 2.7%, down from 2.9% in the previous quarter.

According to Westpac chief economist and former RBA assistant governor Luci Ellis, “the central bank now has all the data it needs to cut rates.” With inflation firmly trending downward, the conditions are increasingly aligning for a shift toward easing.
The RBA’s Forecasts: A Key Indicator
Deputy Governor Andrew Hauser reinforced the importance of the RBA’s own forecasts at the recent Barrenjoey Economic Forum. He pointed to a “gentle path” down to 3.2% for the cash rate over the forecast period, which would bring inflation back to target.
“I would gently and humbly encourage people to pay a bit more attention to that forecast,” Hauser noted, hinting that the board’s outlook — not just the data — will shape the timing of any cuts.
Softening Jobs Market Adds Pressure
On top of slowing inflation, Australia’s labour market is also showing signs of strain. The unemployment rate ticked up from 4.1% to 4.3%, with job applications reaching record highs — further supporting the case for rate relief.

Economists argue that delaying a cut could increase risks, given the long lags involved in monetary policy effects. In plain terms: if the RBA waits too long, the economy could slow more than necessary.
What It Means for Borrowers
With the RBA’s next meeting scheduled for 11–12 August, a rate cut could mean real savings for homeowners and investors. Fixed rate home loans under 5% are already reappearing — something we haven’t seen in years. That’s a potential game-changer for borrowers who’ve been waiting for the right time to refinance or enter the market.
